ICONOGRAPHY 01
These five icons were painted for the altar of Sacred Heart Church in Skiatook, Oklahoma. The artist,
is Karen Heck, a member of the parish, utilized classic Byzantine
style, even to the use of egg tempera and gold leaf. She blended this
aesthetic framework with traditional Osage designs, especially ribbonwork
patterns.
The Sacred Heart of Jesus is depicted as a 19th century Osage chieftain,
while Gabriel and Michael are shown as 18th century warriors. The pose of
Gabriel is taken from a George Catlin drawing, ca. 1834, of an Osage, Chief
Talley. In place of the spear in the original Catlin drawing, Ms. Heck has shown an Osage "messenger staff," appropriate to Gabriel's role in the Annunciation.
